DCF Secretary Chad Poppell recently welcomed representatives of the Florida Clubhouse Coalition to discuss strategies and goals. The Academy was joined in Tallahassee by colleagues from Hope Clubhouse (Ft. Myers), Gainesville Opportunity Center (Gainesville) and Key Clubhouse (Miami).

With a vision to “move DCF from a crisis agency to a prevention agency,” Secretary Poppell supports the involvement of Clubhouse programs across the state. Vocational training, job placements and reduced crisis care for Clubhouse members are valued components of the recovery process.

Eleven Florida Clubhouse programs leveraged their voices in support of a $1.5 million “Workforce Development” budget request with the Department of Children and Families.

If approved by the legislature, funding will be distributed equally among Florida Clubhouses and provide increased employment opportunities for adults living with mental illness. This budget request is also part of Governor Desantis’ Budget Recommendations for Fiscal Year 2019-2020.

Academy members Scott Ehrenpreis and Izzy DeMartine, Board President Joan Geyer, and Director William McKeever joined Clubhouse colleagues from Fort Myers, Gainesville, Lakeland, Miami, Orlando, Pinellas Park and Sanford. It was a day filled with camaraderie, public speaking and advocacy
