A total of 103 different donors contributed during a 24-hour span, from April 28 – 29, during 2020 Giving Challenge, presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. All donations up to $100 during the 2020 Giving Challenge received a 1:1 match by the Patterson Foundation. The Steinwachs Family Foundation added an exclusive match to Academy donors, helping to triple donations to the Academy.

The 2020 Giving Challenge included the participation of nearly 800 area non-profits. The Academy received $26,920 in donations, including matching gifts, which will be used during this crucial time of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Academy has transitioned to fully implemented virtual work-ordered day, Monday – Friday, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. These services provide Academy members with the opportunity to stay on a schedule, build vocational skills and connect to fellow members.

We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who helped to make our first Giving Challenge a success!

Fall 2019 Ambassador Luncheon https://www.academysrq.org/en/posts/events/fall-2019-ambassador-luncheon/ Tue, 26 Nov 2019 16:27:49 +0000 http://127.0.0.1/github/bayfrontmedia/academysrq.org/web/posts/happenings/fall-2019-ambassador-luncheon/ Last Thursday, after the last guest had left the Academy, staff and members came together to celebrate and reflect on our Fall Ambassador Luncheon. Before the task of assessing the effectiveness of our fundraising efforts would even begin, we had already achieved several key goals. This raises the question: how do we measure success?

Success began taking shape in the months leading up to the luncheon. Members took full initiative in the planning. Our young adults proposed and executed the idea of a Young Adult themed program. Success was demonstrated by their courage to share personal stories in a roomful of people.

Guest speaker Kelly Romanoff, Impact and Innovation Officer from the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, (funders of our Young Adult Initiative) discussed the commitment of the Barancik Foundation to children and youth, and shared a deeply personal story that illustrated just how much she truly understands our mission.

Our employment partner from Sunset Cadillac, General Manager Steve Montanaro, spoke of his first visit to the Academy saying “I was in awe. I went from being interested in partnership to being compelled toward partnership.” Steve shared a success story, emphatically illustrating the mutual benefits of providing employment opportunities to our members.

Success was apparent in the hours before guests arrived. Thirty-one members were responsible for the organized fluidity of our culinary team as they put the finishing touches on the buffet lunch and table settings, and in the readiness of our member tour guides, and in all the details that go unseen. Were we perfect? Certainly not. But sometimes success is best measured in how we demonstrate grace in our imperfections.

For us, success was measured in an event wholly conceived and executed by our membership, where guests bore witness to the joy we put into everything we do, and the camaraderie that comes from tireless hours of collaborating toward a passionate pursuit.

With gratitude to the Steinwach Family Foundation, along with an anonymous “friend of the Academy” donor with the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, we reached our financial goal. But more than this, we raised expectations, we raised the confidence of our members, and we raised awareness about challenges and potential of young adults pursuing improved mental health. In the words of our Young Adults, “we just need a chance
to prosper.”

Our Newest Academy Ambassadors https://www.academysrq.org/en/posts/happenings/our-newest-academy-ambassadors/ Fri, 12 Jul 2019 17:50:22 +0000 http://127.0.0.1/github/bayfrontmedia/academysrq.org/web/posts/happenings/our-newest-academy-ambassadors/ Meet Ed Bertha, owner of Real Exclusive Magazine, and Kim Burns, Occupational Therapist and Real Exclusive Contributor, our two newest Ambassadors (pictured here with veteran Ambassador Stewie Bitterman). Ed and Kim are passionate about our mission, and they are already pitching us some great ideas about how to engage potential donors and employers, and bring vibrancy to our community through wellness initiatives.

Kim said, “With the Academy’s current impact on the community, and their commitment to building a more inclusive future for mental health recovery, they are the type of non-profit agency that we are proud to support.”

Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Provides Assistance https://www.academysrq.org/en/posts/events/sarasota-county-sheriffs-office-provides-assistance/ Fri, 08 Mar 2019 14:00:00 +0000 http://127.0.0.1/github/bayfrontmedia/academysrq.org/web/?p=914 Sarasota County is fortunate to count on the leadership and expertise of Sheriff Tom Knight. He leads a team dedicated to providing effective and efficient service in partnership with the Sarasota community. Sheriff Knight has been an Academy Ambassador since our inception.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has been actively involved in Crisis Intervention Training, which equips law enforcement officers with the skills to identify signs of mental illness while interacting with the public. We applaud the efforts of our Sheriff’s Office!

Ambassador Luncheon Fundraiser https://www.academysrq.org/en/posts/events/ambassador-luncheon-fundraiser/ Mon, 12 Nov 2018 14:00:00 +0000 http://127.0.0.1/github/bayfrontmedia/academysrq.org/web/?p=844 You may have noticed that the Arts and Communication team did not publish a newsletter last week. Last minute tasks kept everyone busy so we decided to skip a week.

All the teams were busy preparing for the Ambassador Luncheon Fundraiser held last Thursday, November 8. Planning for the event began months ago. So many details go into putting on an event like a fundraiser. From the invitation design to the centerpieces on the tables to the seating chart to the live streaming to the fabulous food served to the incredible member stories, it took everyone’s participation to make it a success. And boy was it a success! Our dining room was filled to capacity with generous family, friends and community leaders who share in our mission and want to help us succeed. Each member had a role, some had many roles, and everyone rose to the occasion and performed beautifully.

After the event, everyone was exhausted, but still had smiles knowing that, once again, we came together and achieved success!
